Otherwise, this page is designed to provide you with information about how to follow-up on / change / update us on any existing referrals made to specialists by your physician or nurse practitioner.

Please note that your clinician has usually chosen a specific specialist for a reason. Specialists wait times vary and can take anywhere from 2weeks- 3 months from the time the referral is made to hear back from the specialist office. The pandemic has caused a significant backlog of referrals and many specialists are not taking referrals for the next 6-12 months.

Please do not cancel a specialist appointment without speaking to our front administrative staff first, as we are working hard to get these appointments for you and you may not realize the amount of time and advocacy that has already been done on to get you this appointment.

RESCHEDULING A SPECIALIST APPOINTMENT
To avoid any miscommunication with the specialist’s office, please contact them directly to reschedule your appointment. Please email our office to let us know the new date, as we track each appointment to ensure we receive the consult note after you have been seen.

CANCELLING A SPECIALIST APPOINTMENT
Please see the below common reasons that patients cancel. It is typically best to contact the specialist’s office directly to cancel your appointments but before you cancel your appointment, please speak with your referring doctor first. As specialist appointments are difficult to secure, we want to make sure that cancelling the appointment is the best solution for you. Please email our office to let us know as we track each referral.

Common reasons patients may cancel:

  • The appointment time does not work - it is best to contact the specialist’s office directly to try to reschedule the appointment to another day.

  • The location is too far - please ask the specialist’s office if they have another location. Specialists sometimes work in more than one location. If there is no other option that works for you, please contact our office and we will try to find another specialist. Please note that this will take time, and a new referral starts at the beginning of a new wait list.

  • You no longer require the referral - please contact our office so that we can advise your physician, referring clinician.

Referral Updates

MAKING UPDATES TO YOUR EXISTING REFERRAL

Contact Information: If you need to update your contact information for a specialist referral, please call our office.

Symptoms: If your symptoms change, please call our office so that we can advise your physician.

Location: If the location of the specialist’s office is too far, please ask the specialists office if they have an additional location. Specialists often work in more than one location. If it is not an option, please contact our office to let us know so we can redirect the referral to a different specialist.

REDIRECTING YOUR EXISTING REFERRAL TO A DIFFERENT SPECIALIST

Your family physician, or nurse practitioner has chosen this specialist for a particular reason. If you would like to redirect your referral elsewhere, please have: the name, address, phone and fax number of the specialist you wish to see. Please call our office to let us know you have cancelled your current referral and provide us with the new information. If want your referral re-directed to a different specialist, please note this takes time and a new referral puts you on a new waiting list.
